a preview of summer

Can you believe that the weather was warm enough 2 evenings ago that the kids were running around in bathing suits and playing in the water like this? We live on a street in Brooklyn with extra wide sidewalks and ever since the weather has been slowly getting milder, our building has come alive again with impromptu playdates outside. It reminds me of days when I was a kid growing up in Queens, playing Kick the Can and SPUD (remember SPUD?) in the street with all the neighborhood kids. I feel lucky that I live in a community where we can recreate a little of that for our kids - maybe I’m wrong, but seems rare in this urban environment to be able to just hang on the street with 15 of our kids running up and down the block (but yes! we still have eyes on the back of our heads!) with front doors open. Pizza gets ordered, dinner is done, the adults have some wine, and a whole lot of fun and neighborly conversation is had by all. By Sunday, (Flea day of course) the sun and warm weather was gone.
